PSHE

At Curridge we teach Personal, Social and Health Education as a whole school approach following the Jigsaw scheme of work. Jigsaw is a mindful, comprehensive and child-centred approach to PSHE which aims to help children understand and value who they are and how they can relate and communicate to others in this ever-changing world.

Intent

We want our children to leave Curridge with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware of different factors which will affect their world and learn how to deal with these confidently to manage their own mental health and wellbeing.

The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.

Implementation

The Jigsaw Programme complements our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, and to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be.

Each Jigsaw session begins with an opportunity for mindfulness conducted through a ‘Calm Me’ script which allows pupils to develop a calming approach that works best for them, both within the sessions and beyond. The Jigsaw planning covers a range of meaningful topics, from racial difference to navigating friendship turbulence. The wide breadth of topics allows for our pupils to explore, in great depth, potential issues that may face them or are already affecting them.

Our PSHE lessons are taught through Jigsaw’s six half termly themes with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level):

Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Differences (including anti-bullying)

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals

Spring 2: Healthy Me

Summer 1: Relationships

Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Impact

By the time our children leave our school they will:

·       be able to approach a range of real-life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life.

·       have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.

·       have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships.

·       show an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society.

·       recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.

·       be able to identify and manage their mental health effectively.

·       understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level.
